Host communities within the Greater Port Harcourt Area have been assured of good working relationship for their peaceful disposition and willingness to collaborate with the Authority in the New City project.
Amb. Desmond Akawor, Administrator, Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority (GPHCDA) stated this during a familiarization visit to host communities of Igwuruta, Omagwa and Aluu. The Authority prepares to relocate to its permanent Head Office by the end of May, 2016.
Amb. Akawor, on assumption of office in June 2015, made a commitment to relocate the Authority to a permanent site and kick-start immediate development in the New City. “Greater Port Harcourt City development Authority can no longer operate from the Old City at Trans Amadi; this relocation will propel serious development in line with the New Rivers Vision to develop more cities outside Port Harcourt” he said.
He further applauded the people of Igwuruta, Omagwa and Aluu for supporting the PDP during the elections, adding that Governor Nyesom Wike is interested in fulfilling the promises made to the people of Rivers State. Amb. Akawor thanked them for identifying with the New City project and for supporting the infrastructural development of the State Government.
In their separate responses, the Nye-nwe-ali: Igwuruta, Prof. Samuel Wekhe; Omuolo Omagwa, Chief Samuel Onyegbule; Omuoda Aluu, Chief Harry Agbarakwe and Chief Ken Nwobunwo, representing the paramount ruler of Mbodo Aluu, commended the plan to relocate the Authority to the New City, stating that such initiative would boost investors’ confidence as well as encourage the host communities. The royal fathers also appealed that the issues of support to host communities, land acquisition and compensation should be on the priority list of government.
The Hon. member representing Ikwerre constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly and also the Chairman House Committee on Greater Port Harcourt, Hon. Anselem Oguguo, expressed confidence in the leadership of the Board and Management of GPHCDA and assured his constituents of effective representation, especially on Greater Port Harcourt matters.
Hon. Oguguo thanked the communities and charged them to remain peaceful and always employ dialogue in resolving issues.
